I've had the idea for this song for years. Since cell phones have gotten more popular the rings have increased in their diversity. I thought about making a song that included many of the funky rings as well as some different cell phone situations. For this CD, I finally got the chance to do it.

The music for this song came about when I accidentally played the song ‘Soul Circus” on fast-forward in my DVD player. It was so funky on fast-forward that I took my DVD player into the studio and plugged it into Pro Tools. “Soul Circus” on fast-forward became the music for “Cell Phone”.

We also hooked up my midi bass into a synth so that I could play the rings with my bass. It was so fun that I soloed a little bit at the end of the song. It's kinda nice hearing the cell phone solo.

The song originally included a ring from NOKIA. I contacted them and sent them a copy of the song. They responded with, “the song is too ‘risque…'” for us to be able to use their rings. Wow. A Victor Wooten song too risque? Maybe I am growing up.

We then got an email from another NOKIA employee stating that we could use the rings. Then another saying we couldn't, then another saying we could. This ‘could – could not' thing went back and forth a few too many times for me so I took the NOKIA rings off of the song. I replaced their ring with one of my own based on my song “What Did He Say?” I don't see how this song could have hurt NOKIA at all, actually I think that the song would have helped them. Oh well.

Listen to Kurt's cell phone psalm during the fade of the tune.
