After recording this groove, I started searching for the appropriate singer. I was trying to contact India Arie, Chaka Khan, and others until my manager, Danette, brings this woman named Saundra to a clinic I was doing at the Bass Collective in NYC. After hearing her sing I knew exactly what needed to be done. I gave her the music track and asked her to come up with the verses. What she came back with is what you hear on this CD; a vocal masterpiece. Saundra is a ‘real' singer and artist. I then asked her to sing on many of the other songs on the CD. For some of the tracks, I just sent the music up to her in NY. and asked her to add whatever she felt and heard. She nailed it each time. Before I had Saundra on the track, Speech came to the studio. He fell in love with the Groove and wrote his own lyrics. So now I have two versions of the same song and they are both very different. I almost put both of them on this CD. We will let Speech's version out one day. It's very cool. Another masterpiece on this song is found in JD's drum track. Listen close to the way he plays on the verses. He ‘doesn't play' more than he ‘does play'. This is awesome!!! I can't imagine any other drummer in the world who would dare try this approach and make it work. With all of the space JD provides on the verses, the choruses really come alive when he plays the full groove. This can't be explained. It must be heard. JD Blair is The Groove Regulater . Listen close for the horns to come in near the end of the song. They are ‘sweet'. |
