We had just finished recording one song and needed to record another one before the day was over. I didn't really have a song ready to record so I just started from scratch. I got an idea and quickly explained it to everyone before I forgot it. We just started jamming on the 5/4 groove and the rest of the song fell together. As we were working on the song, Peter Rowan walked in. I asked him to go in and do a vocal pass on the song. He went in and sang it one time and that's what ended up on the CD. Pretty amazing.
Tali plays claw-hammer banjo as a hobby. She had never recorded before. I had to talk her into it. Because the studio made her nervous we decided to record at my house. We borrowed a banjo from Bela and set up two microphones and the Roland VS1680 in my room. About 3 hours later we had a banjo part that we were both very happy with. She learned a lot about how the recording process works and why it can sometimes take a long time just to get one part right. I think that it's a great recording for her first time. She still can't believe that it's her that sounds so good.
I was playing with the Flecktones in Alexandria, VA. When Rik Kaplan showed up with this Sitar Bass. He's the same guy that got Bela going with his first Sitar Banjo. I didn't even get to plug the bass in that day but he told me to take it with me and see what I could do with it. I found that it worked great for this song so I came up with a melody and recorded it late one night at home.
